AI-detection tools are now common in schools, universities, and training organisations. The aim is often well-intentioned: protect academic integrity and maintain trust in assessment results. But these systems can introduce a problem that’s becoming hard to ignore: AI bias that affects multilingual learners.
For students who use English as an additional language, the patterns in their writing may be incorrectly flagged as 'AI-generated,' even when the work is entirely their own. The result? Frustration, mistrust and in some cases, unfair academic penalties.
Many AI-detection tools are trained on vast collections of first-language English writing. This is one of several types of AI bias that can appear in educational technology.
